Sneaky little cover here! Heeey!
Thanks to the guys at Perfect Havoc for letting us upload this tune and give us a free download! River is bringing out her first single in February and we are very much looking forward to that! Also here is the a-cappella version for all the producers out there!
Usually we wouldn’t post a cover of a current chart track. Especially so if it was a cover of Drake’s made-for-internet meme monster ‘Hotline Bling’ … insert vine here …. however, when it is Erykah Badu sometimes exceptions have to be made.
Drake’s internet friendly ‘Hotline Bling’ has been transformed into a 7 plus minute epic featuring silky neo-soul groove that we just love and a trippy middle section full of Badu’s answer phone .. “If you’re calling to beg for some shit in general, press 4”.
The retitling to ‘Hotline Bling But U Can’t Use My Phone Mix’ references the superb ‘Tyrone’ and also an upcoming mixtape. New Badu. Now that is something to look forward to.
Been really enjoying this old Quincy Jones cut from his 1973 album You’ve Got It Bad Girl. This track is a beautiful instrumental take on the Lovin’s Spoonful’s ‘Summer In The City’. Its a perfect bit of old soul, rounded off with a vocal from Valerie Simpson, full of lush strings, funky keys and bubbling organ … a cool-down to a hot summers day. There are some serious players on this track as well. Bob James and George Duke (!) take the keyboard/piano duties, Ray Brown is on bass and Phil Woods on sax (presumably wearing his signature hat). Great track to play out in the summer heat and sampling gold … If thats your thing.
Someone sent me Kindness completely out of the blue most probably because this track is a cover of the Eastenders theme tune. Yep *that* Eastenders. Guess what – its actually brilliant. Bouncy bass line and etherial vocals. I’m no fan of chillwave and I’m certainly no expert but I really enjoyed the whole album. (I am, however, a connoisseur of covers)
So in answer to the big question thats on everyones lips. Yes, this is the best cover of the Eastenders theme I’ve ever heard.
Having said that ‘House’ from the same album is even better … for when you’ve finished with this track. Either way I’m glad to discover there is a bit of ‘Kindness’ in the world
That was dreadful. Sorry. Couldn’t help myself.
Danish glitch driven pop cover of the Spice Girls? Check. Its as mental as it sounds and is actually not that bad. I’ve certainly played enough ill-judged Spice Girls covers in my time and they’ve never turned out this well.
I’m an absolutely huge fan of William Onyeabor. One of the best albums in the last couple of years if you ask me even though it was music written decades ago. It still sounds fresh as ever.
To celebrate the release of this compilation album Luaka Bop released an album of remixes and cover versions. This Hot Chip cover is one of the better ones. Can someone send me this on vinyl. I don’t have anything to play it on. I’d just like the artwork. Thats what vinyl is for right?
