I’ve been revisiting Alicia Key’s Unplugged album over the weekend and although at times it is prone to a little self-indulgence there are some stand out moments. For me ‘Unbreakable’ is that. Built around a keyboard lick from Eddie Kendrick’s 1977 song ‘Intimate Friends’ its a song that really shows of her voice. Forget the artist that Alicia Keys has become because for me her voice is best appreciated in the stripped back and intimate setting. Live is best.
Interestingly this same sample is the basis for Erykah Badu’s ferociously tight grooving ‘Fall In Love (You’re Funeral)‘ which will need to be the subject of its own post. Its a disgrace that its not already up here on Genre Confused.
